GIA
launches comprehensive analysis of industry segments, trends, growth drivers,
market share, size and demand forecasts on the global Perlite market. The global
market for Expanded Perlite is projected to reach 3.9 million metric tons by
2022, driven
by stable application opportunities in the construction, horticulture, and
industrial sectors.
Perlite is a naturally
occurring siliceous rock, a volcanic glass formed due to obsidian’s hydration. Number
of other glasses is formed due to the effect of volcanoes, but Perlite is
different from the rest as it significantly expands when heated until a
particular temperature, referred to as the softening range. At that point,
Perlite is capable of expanding between 4-20 times form its original volume.
The expansion capability of Perlite is due to its water content. Upon heating, the
water containing crude rock expands just as how a kernel of corn pops, and
increases in volume upon heating. The U.S. is one of the largest global producers as
well as consumers of Perlite, both in expanded and crude forms. Several states
in the west of the U.S. have large Perlite deposits. Other countries with large
deposits of crude Perlite and which also produce huge volumes of expanded
Perlite include Italy, Greece, Philippines, Turkey, Mexico and China. There are currently few Perlite deposits
worldwide, with all the desired expansion characteristics. Major deposits are
present in the U.S., Turkey, Greece and South America. Perlite ore from mines
in these countries are supplied to a number of Perlite expansion facilities
that have been established across the European continent and in other
countries. The mines in South America, Turkey and the U.S. have been identified
as having ore with the required natural purity.
The unique properties such as superior sound and
thermal insulation, durability, low bulk density through climate changes, and
fire resistance make expanded Perlite highly useful for the construction sector.
With major applications in lightweight concretes and mortar for substrates, expanded
perlite is used as a substitute for gravel or sand in fire-retardant and lightweight
insulating concretes. As an extremely versatile material, Expanded
Perlite could be milled differently to suit various insulating applications
including cinder blocks, cement mixtures, bricks, boulders, and thermal, audio,
and structural insulation panels in the construction sector. Currently, the construction
sector is the largest consumer of expanded Perlite. Use of Perlite in cement production ensures
replacement of 40% of the harmful and environment deteriorating effects during
cement production. In addition, Perlite reacts chemically with lime and
produces a dense and impermeable concrete.
Perlite is used in
horticulture across the world, in the form of an important component of
soil-less growth mixes especially in genetically modified crops. In these
mixes, Perlite offers the required optimum-moisture retention and aeration
properties which aid in accelerated growth of plants. Perlite saves 50-80% water along with aiding the
growth of plant root systems in agriculture and horticulture industries.
Perlite also helps in creating a barrier, thereby helping retain moisture in soil,
reducing run-off and helping in drawing water uphill. It also acts as a
high-grade fertilizer and insecticide. The material’s light weight
characteristic makes it suitable for container growing of house plants and
non-commercial plants.
As
stated by the new market research report on Perlite, Asia-Pacific represents the largest as well as
the fastest growing regional market with a CAGR of 4.8% over the analysis
period led by growing investments in infrastructure development projects, spurt
in smart city initiatives and rapid urbanization and industrialization.
