The Global Market for Heavy Duty Diesel (HDD) Catalysts for On-Road Trucks is Projected to Reach US$2.6 Billion by 2022

Tightening Emission Norms to Drive Growth in the Global Heavy Duty Diesel (HDD) Catalysts Market, According to a New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

GIA launches comprehensive analysis of industry trends, growth drivers, market share, size and demand forecasts on the global Heavy Duty Diesel (HDD) Catalysts market. The global market for Heavy Duty Diesel (HDD) Catalysts for On-Road Trucks is projected to reach US$2.6 billion by 2022, driven by the implementation of stringent regulations to curb harmful emissions from HDD vehicles.

Diesel engines are known for their high efficiency, reliability, durability, and low-cost operation and are widely used in on-road vehicles and non-road machines. Diesel engines, especially the heavy duty diesel (HDD) engines, are the mainstay for trucks, buses, construction machinery, material handling equipment, mining & quarrying machines, and agricultural & forestry equipment. Despite their commercial success and unrivalled engine performance, HDD engines attract a lot of flake for their large environmental footprint. Exhaust emissions of HDD engines contain significantly high volumes of pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are categorized as toxic and harmful to environment and human health. These pollutants, when released into air, contaminate the environment and result in formation of toxic smog and acid rains. In addition, HDD engine emissions, if inhaled, potentially cause health problems such as breathing issues, lung related disorders, and blood contamination etc. Being a widely used automotive engine type, HDD engines represent one of the primary contributors to environmental pollution, globally.

Against this backdrop, governments across the world have formulated stringent regulations to reduce and contain the harmful pollutants and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions released from HDD engines. Such regulations are more prominent in regions such as the United States and Europe, where successive regulatory legislations have been launched in the past two decades to monitor and supervise the HDD engine performance. The regulatory norms formulated by the U.S. and European agencies are being followed, either in their original form or in a localized format, by several countries including India, China, Brazil, and Japan among others. For instance, India implemented the Euro IV emission standard as Bharat IV and China as China IV in their respective countries. The stringent regulatory scenario has created a fertile ground for the proliferation of innovative heavy duty diesel (HDD) catalysts, the catalytic systems specifically designed to convert toxic substances present in diesel engine exhaust into non-toxic and less harmful substances through chemical reaction. With regulatory legislations becoming harsher with every successive amendment, the importance of HDD catalysts is gaining precedence day-by-day. Against this backdrop, HDD catalysts such as Diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Lean NOx Catalysts (LNC), and Lean NOx Traps (LNT) are finding use in OEM/factory-built vehicles and machinery and are also being widely sold in the aftermarket.

DOC, which constitutes the most widely used catalytic solution for diesel engine vehicles, functions in the same line as a gasoline catalytic converter and decomposes pollutants such as HC, PM and CO released from diesel engine through the exhaust stream, converting them into less harmful components such as CO2 and water. Similarly, SCR is the widely used NOx reduction technology that allows HDD vehicles comply with the NOx emission standards. Fabricated for mobile as well as stationary emissions, SCR system can seamlessly remove the NOx emissions in engine exhaust gas to eliminate the harmful impact of NOx emissions in exhaust gases.

As stated by the new market research report on Heavy Duty Diesel (HDD) Catalysts, the United States represents the largest regional market, worldwide. Asia-Pacific is poised to record the fastest CAGR of 15.5% over the analysis period,  led by implementation of stricter regulatory norms in major HDD engine markets such as China and India and rising production and consumption of HDD engines across the region.

Major players covered in the report include BASF SE, Clean Diesel Technologies Inc. (CDTi), Johnson Matthey plc, N.E. Chemcat Corp., Clariant, and Umicore N.V, among others.

The research report titled “Heavy Duty Diesel (HDD) Catalysts: A Global Strategic Business Report” announced by Global Industry Analysts Inc., provides a comprehensive review of market trends, issues, drivers, and other strategic industry activities of global companies. The report provides market estimates and projections for all major geographic markets such as the US, Canada, Japan, Europe (France, Germany, Italy, UK, Spain, Russia and Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (China, and Rest of Asia-Pacific), and Rest of World.
