The Global Market for Organ Preservation Solutions is Projected to Reach US$178.8 Million by 2020
Increasing Demand for Organs for Transplantation
Drives the Global Organ Preservation Solutions Market, According to a New
Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.
GIA launches comprehensive
analysis of industry segments, trends, growth drivers, market share, size and
demand forecasts on the global Organ Preservation Solutions market. The global market for Organ Preservation Solutions is
projected to reach US$178.8 million by 2020, driven by record high increase in the number of patients awaiting
transplant and the crucial need to successfully preserve organs long enough to
allow tissue matching and transport between transplant centers.
The global market for organ
preservation solutions is witnessing steady growth, encouraged by the increased incidence of vital organ failure and
the large number of patients awaiting organ transplantation worldwide. Also
driving growth in the market is the aging population and the increased risk of multi
organ failure in the elderly; growing per capita healthcare spending; and increasing
reimbursement coverage for organ transplantation procedures
not only in the developed nations such as the United States and the United Kingdom
but also in emerging economies such as India. Technological advancements and
research breakthroughs in organ preservation will further drive growth in the
market. Organ shortages and change in transplant donor demographics tend to
create opportunities for organ preservation solutions by exerting pressure on
the need to achieve optimal organ preservation. The increase in governmental
and NGO initiatives to encourage people to donate organs is benefiting awareness
and willingness to donate organs. Deceased donation is especially receiving a major
boost from the awareness campaigns. Despite the opportunities for growth, the
market will face challenges posed by high procedural costs.
Custodiol HTK emerged as
the market leader in organ preservation solutions. Custodiol
solution is now being increasingly employed in the preservation of kidney,
liver, and heart. Other solutions include Perfadex, HypoThermosol, and
Renograf, among others. Custodiol
HTK delivered better results as against Euro-Collins
solution during prospective trials with advanced features, such as less
leucocyte adhesion and low viscosity. Further, the solution performed at par
with UW solution except for elevated delayed graft function rates. Today, HTK
solution represents the preferred solution for preservation of abdominal solid
organs. In terms of preservation
techniques, Hypothermic
Perfusion Preservation (HPP) is vastly preferred technique, compared to Static Cold Storage (SCS). Unlike SCS that does not allow continuous
contact of the organ with the solution, HPP involves machine perfusion that
maintains a continuous supply of solution to the preserved organ. Another major
trend is the emergence of Ex-Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP), an advanced technique
that allows warming up of preserved cooled lungs during the reconditioning
phase, when the donated lungs can be evaluated before transplantation.
As stated by the new
market research report on Organ Preservation Solutions, Europe represents
the largest market worldwide. Asia-Pacific ranks as the fastest growing market
with a CAGR of 16.9% over the analysis period, led by the growing population,
higher disposable incomes and healthcare spending, and increasing importance of
Asian countries as hot spots for transplant tourism.
Major players covered in
the report include
21st Century Medicine, BioLife Solutions Inc., Claris Injectables Limited, Dr.
Franz Köhler Chemie GmbH, Essential Pharmaceuticals LLC, Lifeline Scientific, Preservation
Solutions Inc., and XVIVO Perfusion AB, among others.
